Student Web Tools

WebNotes

"Finally, a web annotation that makes sense." With WebNotes you can highlight notes and stick notes to web pages, organize notes in folders and email links to others. The highlighting and collecting are done via a browser toolbar or bookmark, and the service costs $300/user/year or $35/user/month. Any information source that can be accessed over the Web can be annotated, although if it is a password-protected service, the viewer must also have access.
As a student you are continuously doing research. Any note taker knows that highlighting and sticky notes is a must and now you can do this on the web. You have to stay organized with all the information you come across on the Internet. WebNotes allows you to categorize and organize through a filling system. You also have the option to share your findings with others.
This tool was incredibly straight forward and easy to use. I was impressed with the ease of setting up this tool and can see myself sharing this site information with other students, family and friends. The best part I learned about this tool is that when you want to share pages via e-mail or link, those that you share it with do not need to have WebNotes installed to access your annotations.

Choice Tool

Smarty Pig
 https://www.smartypig.com/

Smarty Pig is an online piggy bank. Free and easy to use, Smarty Pig helps keep saving for wanted items at ease. This financial management tool is fairly basic, but makes saving money easy and fun.  When you have a basic checking account through your bank you may also have a basic savings account as well. Have you ever been able to set up five or more saving accounts that are labeled for specific items you are saving for? Smarty Pig allows you to see all categories that you are saving for and lets you chose the amount of money that you would like to enter towards each saving. You can chose to set up automatic withdrawals through bank accounts or transfer money when you decide. I learned that you can also share your saving goals online with friends and family so that they can help contribute towards your savings.
When choosing an item such as a wedding day, you will be asked to set a goal date. This will help keep you on track on motivated when you see that you are only a certain percentage away from your goal date. This account will also give you an exact estimate of how much money has to be put away on a monthly basis so you can prepare.
As a student I would see this tool as a great way to manage wants between needs. Setting a goal and keeping yourself on track will help with those sudden urges to buy.

Google Tool

Google Buzz

Google Buzz is another social media tool that is taking aim at social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. Google Buzz is very simular to other social media web-sites where you share status updates, photos, videos and more. With Google Buzz you can also intergrate other services from around the web such as Picasa, Twitter, You Tube, etc.
I selected to find out more about Google Buzz, a google web tool because I recall reading a news article about this new form of social media. In the article, the writing really promoted this web-tool making me believe that there was going to be a big booming effect with Google Buzz. Six-months later and I still do not see anything that can compete with Facebook.
Google Buzz is easy to set up and use. If you are connected on your gmail account often you will see your "Buzz" section listed and continuously get side tracted. I learned that Google Buzz will take your gmail inboxes and talk IM contacts to see who you are comminicating with most frequently for your friend list. Just as anyother social media tool. Be careful with what you decide to share with the world.
I do not nominate this as a top tool for students only because it is still a new social media route that has not grown by increase of users. Knowing that almost all of your contacts have a Facebook account, I would suggest the students continue to keep a profile where they will be able to stay in touch with their contacts on a promising basis.

Social Bookmark Tools

ClipClip

ClipClip is a social bookmarking tool that has the name to describe its use. ClipClip, clipclip.org/  allows you to scrapbook information you find on the internet and collect all in one area. If you find and article of interest and a picture of the same interest on another site, just "clip clip" and add to your page. This application is free and would be beneficial for personal use. I can remember when I was young, spending time cutting out articles and pictures in magazines. I was only able to complete a few sheets of my interest colaborated all together. The rest of my cut outs where found in a pile; a pile called, wasted time.  Unorganized and forgotten.
I am looking forward to starting my own page of different interest to share with friends and family.

Stumble Upon

Stumble Upon is a bookmarking website that logs and tracks your interest, buying history, likes and more.
At Stumble Upon, http://www.stumbleupon.com/ you create your account answering questions about interest. Once you have this account, it may be hard to revert back to google for it will skip all of the non-interest in your search. Keeping track of where you shop, what you like and give you the most resourceful site used on the internet. I am excited to find a bookmark that will cut out the middle man and not have me spend wasted time on the internet. This would definitely be my personal go to site when shopping online.
There are many users on Stumble Upon, you can be a public or private user by choice.
I learned that there is a default to using this bookmark. There is no option to enter into the direct link of a site, for you have to copy and paste the tail of that link into another browser. This is because Stumble Upon wants you to stay inside their site rather than being sent out.

Social Network Tools

LinkedIn

One Social Network Tool that I have been eagered to find more about is LinkedIn, http://www.linkedin.com/nhome/
Receiving emails upon emails from personal contacts to join this new Networking site, I finally took the time to read in. LinkedIn is a popular network tool to support experienced professionals worldwide. Setting up a profile to summarize your accomplishments, you find or are founded by other professionals. LinkedIn is a  site that will give you the opportunity to build your most resourceful key in success, networking.
Currently, I am seeking new employment in my career as a Dental Assistant. LinkedIn will allow me to stay connected and find employment in the very large, yet small dental world.
I am confident that this is a secured network tool for many of my close and personal contacts use this site and it is rated as a 100% success rate for networking. Knowing this, I joined the LinkedIn world. I was surprised by how quick and easy it was to set up my account. After entering my contact information, it as a step by step process. After one question was asked and completed another would follow. If you would like to add additional information you can, but the basics were simple. Name, contact, employment and schooling background. Easy.
I am looking forward to seeing exactly how my new LInkedIN account will benefit my search for employment for I could be contacted by a dentist themselves or if I will be linked to a dentist by a family or friend that i am connected with on this specific site. Unfortunately, in order to contact a member about employment opportunity, you do need to be a fully subscribed member. Cost is 25 dollars a month. I will hope for the best and keep my funds.

MinorMonitor

A very helpful Social Network tool that all parents with children that are a member on Facebook and Twitter need to know about is called MinorMonitor.  http://www.minormonitor.com/
MinorMonitor is a site that helps parents monitor their childrens social accounts from potentially dangerous activities such as bullying, hate crimes, drug use and sexual references.
There has been numerous stories of children taking their own lives because of how a peer or another member has impacted their lives in such a negative manner over the internet.
I learned that 38% of children on Facebook are 12 years and under. Having children grow up in the technological world includes social media sites. You have to remember as a parent that just because your child may be in your home "out of harms way", there is an entire world of danger happening right inside your very own home; on the internet.
MinorMonitor is a web-based product that is used personally, for free. This tool is easy to set up for there is no custom settings. MinorMonitor does has a privacy policy stating that the information given is secured and not shared. Always take the time to read the Terms of Use. The difficult part is getting your child to agree in your monitoring privileges for you need your childs log-in information. Do not take the chances of the unknown. Take control.
